Y5/6 - Blackbirds

Welcome to Blackbird Class, the home of both year 5 and 6.  In Blackbirds, we focus on the teaching of Upper Key Stage 2, the successfully completion of SATs and of course, the preparation and transition into Secondary School.  In doing this, we teach all curriculum subjects in an interactive, creative and challenging way.  The focus is developing each child in Blackbirds to become a resilient, determined and confident learner by understanding that the individual is at the heart of their success. By developing a desire to learn, a positive attitude to achieve and hard-working behaviours for learning, they will become successful learners.  Thus, the aim is to end their experience at Bredgar on a high and provide them with the correct attitude and tools for their next school.

Blackbird Class is taught by Mr Bassett and supported by Mrs Harvey and Mr Massey.  The team are highly experienced at providing a positive, safe and stimulating working atmosphere.

The curriculum:

Maths follows White Rose Maths curriculum and focusses on the teaching of the processes, fluency and problem solving and reasoning skills for each aspect of the curriculum. Times tables knowledge is revised daily via the website “Timestable.co.uk” and complemented by individual membership to TT Rockstars.

Class Reading is promoted by a termly class reader shared at the end of each day and weekly visits to the school library to explore other genres of text for further interest.  Independent reading is assessed using the AR reading scheme.  Comprehension is taught via a bespoke adaptation of VIPERS, teaching the discreet skills of comprehension on a thrice-weekly cycle.

Writing and GPaS is taught through a sequencing of skills to promote oracy and discussion of a text or genre; allowing greater understanding of features of writing, language choice and structure, before children plan, write, edit and finally complete their writing.  Within this process, children are taught the aspects of grammar needed to complete their writing, allowing understanding within contextual application.  The spelling program is taught through Twinkl and the handwriting scheme is via “Teach Handwriting”.

Religious Education, being a Church school, is taught following the Canterbury Diocesan Schools scheme of work, where we teacher units for “Understanding Christianity”, Humanism and World Faiths.

The foundation subjects are taught as follows:

We teach PSHE, Music, Art and DT through the schemes created by Kapow.

We teach Humanities via a bespoke scheme; teaching Geography and History in alternate terms.

We teach Computing using Teach Computing - three topics covered over the three long terms.

We teach PE through the PE Hub, where we have two lessons per week.

Pupils have a term of forest school a year.

Year 5 have a term of swimming.
